BNSF Los Angeles rail yard scheme wins harbour commission approval

Ocean Way International Limited >>> News  2013Äê3ÔÂ13ÈÕ
THE Los Angeles Harbour Commission has certified the final Environmental Impact Report for the proposed Southern California International Gateway (SCIG) intermodal rail yard.
This landmark rail infrastructure project is expected to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of moving containerised cargo through the harbour complex.
The near-dock rail container transfer facility represents a private investment of US$500 million by Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway, which plans to develop and operate the greenest intermodal rail yard in the US on a 185-acre site four miles from the San Pedro Bay port.
Initially, the facility is expected to handle 570,800 TEU. By 2035 it is projected to handle a maximum of 2.8 million TEU..
The project would reduce truck traffic, highway congestion and air pollution by eliminating 1.3 million truck trips annually along a 24-mile stretch of the Long Beach (710) Freeway to BNSF¡¯s Hobart Yard near downtown Los Angeles, said a harbour commission statement.
Said LA Harbour Commission president Cindy Miscikowsk: "By requiring the highest achievable low emissions vehicles as a part of the operation delivery system ensuring that this will be the nation¡¯s cleanest rail yard, this project would be another model link in Southern California¡¯s unparalleled freight logistics chain."
Construction is due to begin later this year, but the project still requires approval by the Los Angeles City Council.
